Home Ranch:
The Lazy SR Ranch operates in the Shields River Valley, near Wilsall, and has done so since Montana was a territory. The Ranch is headquartered on the historic Shields River, named by William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition after John Shields, the blacksmith in the Corps of Discovery.
Today the Ranch raises Black Angus mother cows, selling calves and replacement heifers in the fall each year. The Ranch calves its heifers in mid-February and the balance of its cow herd starting March 20 of every year. Normally calves are available for delivery in October. The Ranch has forward contracted calves, sold calves by video, internet, auction, and private treaty, and also retained ownership.
The Ranch is Montana Beef Quality Assurance Certified Producer # 1342 and possesses State of Montana Premises Identification # 00869WI.
In addition to the home ranch operation in south central Montana, two hours north of Yellowstone National Park, the Ranch also owns Black Angus cows in western North Dakota, near Killdeer.
The Home Ranch runs about 700 Black Angus mother cows, calving in March and selling six-weight calves in October and November of each year. Ranch Black Angus cattle number 275 at Killdeer, North Dakota.
